Most people call me a workaholic; I suppose it's true. I currently teach for both high schools in Hancock County (Oak Glen and Weir High). Since we are on the 4/4 Block Scheduling system, I spend one semester at each school. I also teach computer staff development courses for WVU graduate credit and C++ at Carlow College's Weekend College. At the last Faculty Senate meeting of the 1998-99 school year, I was selected as Oak Glen High School's Teacher of the Year. It is very gratifiying to know that your peers value your teaching ability. Even more fulfilling to me as a teacher has been my nomination by two former students to Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Then in the fall of 1999, I became one of the eight finalists for WV Teacher of the Year.
For the past several years I have been busy writing various documents for both high schools and helping other area schools write theirs. I was the primary author of Weir High School's winning WV & National Blue Ribbon Schools' Nomination Forms as well as Liberty Elementary's winning WV School of Excellence Nomination Form. I also helped write Weir High's winning WV School of Excellence Nomination Form and submitted parts of Oak Glen High School's winning WV School of Excellence & Blue Ribbon School Nomination Forms. I created graphs for Weir Middle School's winning WV School of Excellence & Blue Ribbon School Nomination Forms. I also authored Hancock County's successful Technology Literacy Challenge Fund (TLCF) grant for both high schools during the fourth round of grants.
Additionally, I coach Academic Games at Weir High School and Weir Middle School for grades 7-12 and coach Weir High's Quiz Bowl Team, teach Sunday and Wednesday Bible classes, interpret for the deaf, do some public speaking, write computer programs, and help people with their computer questions. In my spare time, I try to do volunteer work for church and school.
During the 2002-2003 school year, I will teach American Sign Language I, II & III, Visual C++, AP English, and Graphics Presentation. I have also taught English from Grades 9-12, American, World, & West Virginia History, ACT/SAT Preparation, Math Skills, Fortran, Pascal, AP Computer Science, and Japanese I, II, III, & IV. Who knows what the future holds!
Since training as one of the teachers affiliated with the WV Department of Education/Verizon World School's pilot program during the summer of 1994, I have tried to incorporate Internet usage in all of my courses. Some of the output from these classes can be found on OGHS's Student Home Pages and Weir High's Student Home Pages. I have also constructed a web page for my AP English class to help them keep up with assignments and to stay ahead.
I participated with other WV teachers in CTRC 2000 in June as part of WV's Reinventing Education Project. The five "Strategies for SUCCESS" that I developed at CTRC 2000 are featured at this site.
